Lot Description

[CRIME & PUNISHMENT]. 6 documents, incl. freedmen accused of hog steeling and theft from a barber.

Manuscript warrant for the arrest of James Moore and Walon Williams, identified as "persons of color," for the offense of hog stealing. Baldwin County, Georgia, 9 June 1868. One page, 7 7/8 x 12 3/8 in. (creased along folds, few separations with some taped repair). Verso bears sheriff's note that the defendants have been arrested and are in custody, along with docketing and witness list.

5 documents related to the crime of theft committed by Henry Pryor, a Black man, in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Includes a partly-printed arrest warrant dated 6 December 1893, a partly-printed court date notice with bond information dated 9 December 1893, a manuscript note seemingly recording the sworn testimony of Henry Pryor, in which he admits to taking 2 razors and one pair of clippers, a manuscript transcript of court proceedings dated 22 February 1894, and partly-printed court summary dated 7 March 1894.
