Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - OCCUPATIONAL]. Electric railroad sign for Pullman Company employees.
"Notice All Pullman Employees Working The 20th Century Limited Must Report To Track 37." Manufactured by Crouse Hinds, Syracuse, NY. Approx. 13 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. and 7 in. depth. For corner mounting, with attached brown electric cord. Track number "37" adhered to front of sign, likely a later addition.
The 20th Century Limited was an express passenger train on the New York Central Railroad from 1902 to 1967 which traveled between Grand Central Terminal in NYC and Lasalle Street Station in Chicago. Widely considered to be one of the greatest American passenger trains, the train's sleeping cars would have been serviced by the company's "Pullman Porters." The Pullman Company was noted for its porters who were almost exclusively Black men. Though African American men working as Pullman Porters often faced rampant discrimination, difficult working conditions, and received low pay, the position nonetheless still maintained an aura of prestige within the African American community.
