Lot Description

[ENTERTAINMENT]. Posters and promotional materials for Black-cast films, incl. The Flying Ace.

Lot comprised of 9 items, the majority advertising films featuring all-African American casts, including:

The Flying Ace. Norman Studios, 1926. Four (4) items, including a 4pp. press sheet (22 x 14 in.) intended to convince Black theater operators to screen the film in their city, comprised of a replica window card, newspaper articles to be used for promotional purposes, and information from the studio about the potential profitability of the film. A lobby card (11 x 14 in.), and 2 flyers (7 x 9 in. or smaller) promoting the silent film co-starring Kathryn Boyd and Lawrence Criner are also included. -- Black Gold. Norman Studios, 1928. Flyer (7 x 4 1/2 in.) promoting the film centered on the oil fields of Oklahoma, also starring Lawrence Criner and Katherine Boyd. A date, time, and location ("Emerson Theater") are written on one side of the flyer.

From 1919-1928, Norman Studios of Jacksonville, FL, produced several "race films," which featured all African American-cast films shown specifically to African American audiences.

[With:] Mantan Messes Up. Ted Toddy Pictures Co., 1946. 27 x 41 in. poster promoting a film featuring Mantan Moreland, Monte Hawley, Lena Horne, Eddie Green, and others.

Mantan Moreland (1902-1973) was a Black actor who saw widespread popularity in the 1930s and 1940s starring in comedic films with all Black casts.

[Also with:] Karamoja. Kroger Babb Attractions, 1954. 39 x 29 1/2 in. poster promoting a documentary film by Dr. & Mrs. William B. Treutle, produced by Matt Freed. -- Ethnograhie. Leipzig: Druck and Verlag Von F. A. Brockhaus, n.d. (ca late 19th century?). 10 1/4 x 13 1/4 in. engraving. -- Silver gelatin photograph of a Zulu execution ceremony in 1921, as per penciled notation on verso, 6 x 9 in.
