Lot Description
[OUTLAWS & LAWMEN]. Galveston Daily News. Front-page report of the "End of Bill Dalton."
Vol. LIII, No. 78. Galveston, TX: 9 June 1894. 8pp., folio, 22 x 17 1/2 in. This newspaper contains prominent, front-page “stacked” headlines and a lengthy, front-page account of the death of wild west outlaw, Bill Dalton, of the Dalton Brothers Gang.
Bill Dalton (1863-1894) was the co-leader of the Wild Bunch gang and was a member of the Dalton Gang with his brothers Gratton, Bob, and Emmett Dalton. As Doolin and Dalton were accepted as leaders of the gang, it became known as the Doolin-Dalton Gang, and also as the Wild Bunch. Bill Dalton took part in several robberies with the Wild Bunch, but eventually left to form his own Dalton Gang. In May 1894, Dalton and his new gang robbed the First National Bank at Longview, Texas, which involved a shootout that resulted in the deaths of one member of the gang and four citizens. This was the gang's only job.
After separating with their share of the loot, Bill Dalton hid out with his family in a cabin near Elk, Indian Territory. He was tracked and surrounded by US Marshal S.T. Lindsey and a posse on 8 June 1894. Although Dalton escaped through a window at the back of the house, he was shot and killed by Deputy Marshals as he ran through a patch of corn.
