Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA] 16 tintypes of "western" women incl. armed character and Native American subject
16 loose tintypes of unidentified female subjects ranging in size from 3 x 1 7/8 in. to 5 x 3 1/4 in. Although the photographers and locations are unknown, many of the subjects wear western-style clothing or pose before a backdrop inspired by a western landscape. Highlights include:
5 x 3 1/4 in. tintype portrait of a rough-and-tumble character wearing a wide-brimmed hat, a fringed jacket, and trousers. The subject appears to have long hair, suggesting the portrait shows a woman, but it has also been suggested that this could be a man wearing a fanciful fringed coat. The subject stands with arms crossed, one hand holding a small, spur-trigger revolver (few light creases, surface abrasion near top left corner). -- 3 x 1 7/8 in. tintype that appears to show a Native American woman (image a bit dark, creasing to plate). -- 3 x 2 in. tintype of a woman, possibly Hispanic, wearing a striped blanket over one shoulder (scratching to plate near top of subject's head). -- 3 x 1 7/8 in. tintype, standing portrait of a woman wearing a striped blanket around her shoulders, posed before a painted backdrop featuring a mountainous landscape near a body of water. -- 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. tintype in paper mat featuring a lovely young woman wearing gold-tinted jewelry and a black cape.
[Also with:] 2 tintypes showing pairs of women seated together in studio settings. -- Tintype of 3 young women wearing fancy hats and serious expressions. -- Seated view of a young woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and gloves. -- 6 tintypes of women of varying ages.
Together, 16 tintypes.
