Lot Description
[CALIFORNIA]. A group of San Francisco views incl. images of fire and earthquake ruins.
View of the interior of a Chinese store in San Francisco, with Chinese family members posed in background. 4 5/8 x 3 5/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (light toning, spotting, soiling, wear to edges/corners). Mount recto ink inscribed, "Chinee [sic] store / San Francisco." Verso ink inscribed, "Presented by Oscar F. Schinidl[?]" -- Outdoor view of a grammar school at Angel's Camp, California. 7 x 5 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount (toning, few marks, wear and discoloration to mount). Image lightly stamped with caption. Mount recto ink inscribed, "Grammar School / Angels Camp. Cal." Verso ink stamped "Oct 21 1911." -- Copied or enlarged view of San Francisco from an unspecified overlook, as smoke billows into the sky. 7 7/8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photograph (wear to edges/corners). Verso bears ink inscriptions, "The Fire of April 18, 1906, San Francisco, Alta California / A.T. Leonard, Jr., M.D., S.F. - 1924;" hand stamps identifying the image to the library of Alexander Thomas Leonard, Jr., Medical Reserve Corps, US Army, San Francisco, CA; and two 1923 Christmas postage stamps. -- And 6 other views including 4 stereoviews, a photographic negative, and an unmarked and damaged snapshot of women outside of a house. -- Together, 9 photographs.
