Lot Description

[MAPS] Shell Motor Oil Company road map salesman sample. H.M. Gousha Co. ca 1956 or earlier.

Folio. 62 unused road maps, each neatly divided by side tabs. Original portfolio with flap and snap fasteners, the Shell logo stamped on front cover (some soiling or darkening to extremities).

THE GREAT AMERICAN ROADTRIP. The Shell Oil Company, like many oil companies of the time, distributed road maps to drivers as a form of advertising, brand loyalty, and customer service. The 1950s saw a boom in road travel in the United States, and Shell, along with other oil companies, expanded their road map programs. Shell maps of this era are notable for their high-quality cartography, colorful graphics, and often included travel tips, local advertisements, and information about Shell services. RARE: we could not locate any copies in commerce or at auction.

This lot is located in Chicago.
