Lot Description

[NEW YORK CITY]. A Gramercy Park key.

3 1/2 in. lg. iron skeleton key engraved "Gramercy Park" on one side of the bow and "43" on the other (dark patination, some worn areas, scratches). N.d. Provenance: Found in the Northeast.

Gramercy Park is a small, private park in Manhattan, which has been famously accessible by key since the 1840s. The keys are coded and tabs are kept on the ownership of each key. As of 2012, 383 were in circulation.
