Lot Description
[TAFT, William H. (1857-1930)]. A large group of campaign, inaugural, and presidential ephemera.
"Grand Old Party" Taft and Sherman jugate tray, 4 1/4 in.diameter, 1908. -- William Howard Taft cardboard advertising fan, 6 x 13 1/2 in. including wood handle, when upright features an image of a smiling Taft winking one eye, when upside down fan presents the image of a frowning Teddy Roosevelt. Identified at base as "Billy and Teddy" with copyright 1909 by P.A. Schneider. Advertising on verso for "Howes Highlands" grocery store, Stetson's Electric Print, Greenfield, Massachusetts.
[With:] "Official Order of Business of the Republican National Convention. June 16th 1908 Chicago." -- Inauguration program, Washington, DC., 4 March 1909.
[Also with:] Invitations to campaign and White House events, pamphlets, concert program, postal cover, campaign handbill, advertising cards, White House visitor pass, period sheet music, and more.
All items in generally good condition with expected wear given age.
Republican candidate William Howard Taft was elected the 27th President of the United States in 1908, serving from 1909-1913, and later served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the only person to hold both of these offices. His Vice President, James S. Sherman (1855-1912), died in office in 1912.
