Approx. 10 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. with marble covered paper boards. 8pp utilized of a 200+ page ledger. June 16 - August 19, ca 1864-1865. Partially printed headings at top of each page "Annual Medical Report of Examination of men Exempted or Claiming Exemption from Military duty, in Clark County, State of Ohio." (Adhesive repair to spine, chipping.) Pages list 152 men of Clark County, identifying them by "Name," physical "Description," "Where Born," "Residence," "Occupation," "Measurement of Chest," "White or Colored" (all were white), "Weight," "Married or Single," "Weight," and finally "Result" (Exempt or Non-Exempt), and "Cause of Exemption."
Clark County, Ohio, comprises a west central region of the state and includes Springfield, Ohio. The region sent multiple companies of soldiers into the service during the Civil War. Among the men listed in this exemption log, the causes for potential exemption include a wide array of maladies and diseases such as "Vericose Veins of both thigh & leg," "Loss of middle & 1/2 ring finger left hand," "Loss of teeth in Upper jaw," "Deafness in both ears," "Excited action of heart," "Supposed chest disease," "Functional derangement of stomach," "Knee once dislocated," "Supposed fracture of Scapula," "Slight injury to shoulder years ago," and "Tuburculosis." Only one of the exempted men listed, Granville Winger, was documented within the log as having previously served and been discharged. Winger mustered into Co. A, Ohio 94th Infantry in August 1862, and discharged for disability on 3/31/1863 at Murfreesboro, TN.
An interesting record worthy of additional research.
