Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - SPANISH AMERICAN WAR]. 9 autographs of Naval officers and generals, incl. ANDERSON.

Lot comprised of 9 autographs of Naval officers and generals from the Civil War through the Spanish American War-period, matted and housed in five frames. Autographs include:

WORDEN, John L. (1818-1897), US Navy officer in the Civil War who took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads. Clipped signature ("John L. Worden, US Navy"), approx. 1 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. (sight). Matted and framed together with 2 tokens, one inscribed "Our Little Monitor," the other dated "1863," and a 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 in. print entitled First Naval Combat Between Iron Vessels, Hampton Roads March 9th, 1862. Overall, framed display measures 12 1/2 x 12 1/4 in.

WINSLOW, John A. (1811-1873), US Navy officer during the Mexican American War and the Civil War. He commanded the USS Kearsarge during her historic 1864 action off Cherbourg, France, with the Confederate sea raider CSS Alabama. Clipped signature ("Jno. A. Winslow, Captain USN, US Kearsarge, Nov. 9th, 1864"), approx. 1 1/2 x 4 3/8 in. Matted and framed together with a modern portrait of John Winslow and a modern print showing the pitched Naval duel between the CSS Alabama and the USS Kearsarge off the coast of Cherbourg, France on 19 June 1864. Overall, framed display measures 12 1/4 x 17 1/4 in.

ANDERSON, Robert (1806-1871), commanding officer of US Army forces in Charleston when Confederate forces were ordered to capture Charleston Harbor's Fort Sumter in April of 1861. Clipped signature with inscription ("Robert Anderson, Brig. Gen. USA"), dated 9 March 1865, approx. 2 1/8 x 3 1/2 in. (sight). Matted and framed together with a modern portrait of Anderson and a print after an engraving entitled Bombardment of Fort Sumter. Overall, framed display measures 14 x 19 3/4 in.

Frame containing clipped signatures of the following US Navy admirals: DEWEY, George (1837-1917), best known for the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Spanish American War. Clipped signature ("George Dewey"), as Commodore, US Navy, 1 1/4 x 4 1/4 in. (sight). -- SCHLEY, Winfield Scott (1837-1911), hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish American War. Clipped signature ("W.S. Schley, Rear Admiral USA"), 1 1/2 x 3 in. (sight). -- SAMPSON, William T. (1840-1902), aided in victory in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. Clipped signature (W.T. Sampson, USN"), 1 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. (sight). Matted and housed in 9 x 18 1/2 in. frame.

Frame containing clipped signatures of the following US Navy admirals: DUPONT, Samuel F. (1803-1865), Union admiral in the Civil War. Clipped signature ("S.F. DuPont, Rear Admiral, US Navy"), 1 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. (sight). -- FARRAGUT, David G. (1801-1870), achieved fame for Union victories during the Civil War, including Battle of Mobile Bay. Clipped signature ("D.G. Farragut, Vice Admiral"), 1 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. (sight). -- PORTER, David D. (1813-1891), Mexican-American War veteran and US Navy officer who distinguished himself in a number of actions in the Civil War. Clipped signature ("David D. Porter"), as Vice Admiral, 1 1/4 x 3 in. (sight). Matted and housed in 9 x 18 1/2 in. frame.
