Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR-LATE INDIAN WARS] A pair of tintypes of armed soldiers, incl. a menacing cavalry private.

Sixth plate tintype seated portrait of a youthful Civil War cavalry private exuding a menacing demeanor while presenting a cavalry sword in one hand and a clear Colt Army revolver in the other. (Dents, creases, and scratches abundant, with abrasion and image loss in areas and discoloration in others; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear, some separating to spine). -- CDV-sized tintype full standing portrait of an Indian Wars-era private wearing an M1874 5-button sack coat with fold over collar with an M1872 forage cap. He wears gaiters, a knapsack, a canteen, and a rectangular "US" belt plate. The rifle he holds upward appears to be either an M1866 Allin conversion or a slightly later M1868 Trapdoor. (Few imperfections to plate, some areas of slightly softer focus, spotting to mat; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (surface wear, pinholes, losses). -- Together, 2 tintype portraits of armed soldiers.
