Lot Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. TRUMBULL, Jonathan (1710-1785). Signed military appointment.


War-date military appointment signed ("Jonth. Trumbull"), as Governor of Connecticut. Hartford, 16 May 1783. 1p, 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 in. (sight), matted and framed to 16 1/4 x 11 3/4 in. With the embossed paper seal of the state of Connecticut. "Thaddeus Learned" is accepted to be "Quarter Master of the Second Troop of Horse in the fourth Regiment of Light Horse in this State."

An appointment for Thaddeus Larned (also "Learned") (1756-1819), a Connecticut farmer, land speculator, and magistrate. Larned was a "Minute Man" who responded to the Lexington Alarm and participated in the "New York Expedition." Trumbull was a close friend and advisor to George Washington, a colonial and Revolutionary War Governor of Connecticut, and the Paymaster for the Continental Army.

[With:] HUNTINGTON, JEDEDIAH (1743-1818). Document signed ("Jed Huntington") as Treasurer for the State of Connecticut. Hartford, Connecticut. 20 May 1789. 1p, 15 x 9 in. (creasing, tears, completed separated at center fold). Warrant to levy the property of the Selectmen of Wallingford, CT, due to the failure of the town's tax collector Eliakim Hall Jr. to collect and pay taxes due. Docketed on verso and with statement of Sheriff's Deputy regarding his inability to meet the demands of the warrant.

Huntington was a member of the Sons of Liberty, a Revolutionary War general, and later a Connecticut politician.
