Document signed by 13 officers of the 32nd Regiment related to supply of the immediate necessities of the regiment. Addressed "To His Excellency / General Melville." [Grenada?], 30 May 1765. 1p, approx. 9 x 15 1/4 in. Accompanied by a docketed panel associated with the document: "Representation of the Field Officers, Captains & Officers Commanding Companies of the 32d Regt. against the Contractors for Supplying the Subsistence Money to the Troops on Acct. of the Loss of the Benefit of Exchange & the Irregularity of the Supply." Includes an interesting reference in a separate hand and ink to "The Indian Name" changed by proclamation.

An interesting document worthy of additional research.

Britain's 32nd Regiment of Foot was stationed in the Caribbean following the Seven Year's War. The recipient of this letter, General Robert Melville (1723-1809) had a lengthy active military career. He began his military career in 1744 when he became an Ensign with the 25th Foot Regiment (King's Own Scottish Borderers) and saw service in Flanders. He was later promoted to Major and served in Antigua, and saw action at Guadeloupe in 1759. He was appointed Lieutenant-Governor then, in 1760, Governor of Guadeloupe. After the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years War, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General and appointed as Governor General and Commander in Chief of the ceded islands of Grenada, the Grenadines, Dominca, St. Vincent, and Tobago. He served as Governor of the Ceded Islands 1764-1771, the first British Governor of Grenada, during which time this appeal was filed by soldiers of the 32nd Regiment.
