Lot Description

A Group of Three English or American Needlework Samplers
Early 19th Century

The first, worked with polychrome threads on linen ground, depicting house flanked by bird cages and floral urns, with flowering and fruiting trees, interpretation of Adam and Eve, and forest animals, and alphabet and pious verse above, variously inscribed with initials and script, "Agnes Wine Aged 13"; the second, worked with polychrome threads on cotton ground, with central pious verse, surrounded by flowering vine borders, fruit basket, floral urns, bouquet, insects, and birds, inscribed, "C. Brown Octr. 7, 1808"; and the last, worked with polychrome threads on linen ground, with pious verse surrounded by flowers, floral urns, crowns, squirrels, harp, fleur-de-lis, house, birds, and recumbent deer and dog, with meandering flowering vine border, inscribed, "Hannah Rushmer 1837"; all framed.
