Lot Description

Double Action Revolver by Carl Stiegele of Munchen

9mm Centerfire. 5" barrel length. SN: NSN. Blued metal finish mounting an octagonal barrel, lanyard loop to butt, and checkered hardrubber grips with deep relief grotesque masks to butt and serpents above fastening screw escutcheons. Double action six-shot loading gate revolver mounting dovetailed front blade and topstrap rear notch sights. Topstrap is engraved and gold inlaid with the maker name C. STIEGELE JUN. MUNCHEN. Item shows some light spiral scroll engraving to the rear sight notch, and border scroll to the muzzle and forward frame.

Carl Anton Stiegele established his Munich based firearms business in 1854, after a previous venture had ended dismally. Despite this, his business flourished in a new city, and he was soon manufacturing extraordinarily elaborate rifles for wealthy clients from as far afield as Moscow and even Japan. Though better known for the elaborate prize rifles he made, and which have graced the cover of "The Journal of the German Gun Collectors' Association"(No. 15, Fall 2002. Vol 5 No. 3, and No. 41 Fall/Winter, 2009), Stiegele also manufactured a variety of more functional arms, such as this lot.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
