Lot Description
Brooklyn Arms Co. Slocum .32
.32 Rimfire. 3" barrel length. SN: 2024. Blued metal finish with lightly engraved brass frame mounting varnished rosewood grips. Single action five-shot revolver with side-loaded cylinder mounting topstrap notch and German Silver front bead sights. Top of the barrel is marked B.A. CO PATENT APRIL 14TH 1863.
Designed in an effort to circumvent Smith & Wesson's monopoly of the Rollin White patent for fully bored through cylinders, Slocum's patented revolver utilized sliding chambers that could be pushed forward to both eject spent casings and receive fresh rounds before being withdrawn rearward. Chambered in the .32 rimfire cartridge, the revolver was less powerful than the conventional percussion revolvers of the Civil War, and joined the ranks of the many small caliber cartridge revolvers which served as backup weapons. The highly litigious nature of Rollin White guaranteed that this weapon had to contend with numerous ingenious competing designs, and saw only a brief period of production, but more than 10,000 examples were manufactured during its production run from 1863 to 1864.
