Lot Description

Lot of Four Civil War Union Canteens (3 Smooth Side, 1 Bullseye, 2 Maker Marked)
American Civil War

1.) US Pattern 1862 Philadelphia Depot "Bullseye" Canteen with seven rings, maker marked on the spout by HADDEN, PORTER & BOOTH PHILA. With heavy twill woven dark brown jean cloth cover, stopper and old added suspension chain. No sling present.

2.) US Pattern 1858 New York Depot "Smooth Side" Canteen. Hole in sling keeper for stopper chain, both chain and stopper are missing. Covered in brownish jean wool with an old ink identification that reads DAVID HERRING/PURNEL LEGION/INFANTRY/MARYLAND VOLUNTEERS/COMPANY A. According to Historical Data Systems David Herring enlisted in Company A of the Union's Maryland Purnell Legion Infantry on September 19, 1861 and was discharged three years later on September 20, 1864. The regiment served in the Eastern Theater and saw action at a number of skirmishes and battles including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Cold Harbor and the Siege of Petersburg.

3.) Unmarked US Pattern 1858 "Smooth Side" Canteen with jean wool cover and folded and sewn cotton drill sling. An incorrect New York Depot stopper with chain has been added.

4.) US Pattern 1858 New York Depot "Smooth Side" Canteen maker marked by A JEWET on the spout with chained stopper and folded and sewn cotton drill sling.
