Remington Elliot Model 1861 Army Revolver
American Civil War
.44 Cal. 8" barrel length. SN: 9874. Brown patina with brass triggerguard and varnished walnut stocks with German silver escutcheons mounting brass conical front sight and topstrap notch rear. Single action six-shot percussion revolver featuring the operating channel to the loading lever with stop screw installed to prevent withdrawing the pin with the lever locked. Top of the octagonal barrel shows a two-line patent and address mark reading PATENTED DEC. 17 1861/MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS ILION. N.Y. Serial numbers match on the frame, barrel, and rear cylinder. Item shows scattered sub inspector initials including: S to triggerguard, left barrel, left frame, right grip panel, and cylinder; P to left frame and barrel; R to cylinder; L to barrel forward of lever stud. Left grip panel shows a boxed CGC cartouche of Charles G. Curtis, who inspected examples of Remington Elliot revolvers from serial numbers 2446 to 8913 according to Daum and Pate in "U.S. Military Arms Inspector Marks." Bottom of the triggerguard at some point inscribed with a name that is now illegible. Right grip panel has been hand carved with crossed arrows over a tomahawk.
