Lot Description
U.S. Model 1841 Harpers Ferry Saber Bayonet for Guide Key Lug with Scabbard
American Civil War
22.375" single edged semi-Yataghan blade with 17" stopped fuller. 27.25" in overall length with a 4.75" cast brass hilt palm swell and 17 grasping grooves and mounted with a 4" crossguard with a disc quillon on the lower guard and a cock's comb on the muzzle ring. Blade reinforced with a large steel pin in the hilt and with a Harpers Ferry PB/P inspection stamp on the obverse ricasso. A small S inspection is present immediately behind the guard on the top right of the grip and a larger B inspection is present on the top of the grip. The mortise cut in the hilt is cut for 1" guide key as found on Harpers Ferry Type I 1841 Rifle alterations modified from the "Snell" ring bayonet system and for Type II Harpers Ferry 1841 Rifle alterations. A very fine correct pattern brass mounted leather scabbard accompanies the bayonet.
