Lot Description

U.S. Model 1841 & 1855 Harpers Ferry Rifle Saber Bayonet & Scabbard
American Civil War

21.375" single edged semi-Yataghan blade with 15.75" rounded fuller. 26.675" in overall length with a 4.75" cast brass hilt palm swell and 17 grasping grooves and mounted with a 3.75" crossguard with a disc quillon on the lower guard and a cock's comb on the muzzle ring. Blade reinforced with a small steel pin in the hilt behind the guard. Top of hilt with mating mark 35 on it. Tiny sub-inspection marks in the mortise cut. The mortise cut in the hilt does not have the earlier pattern 1" guide key cut, so it is for later Harpers Ferry 1841 Rifle alterations and US Model 1855 Rifles. Arguments have been made that the lack of "US" mark on the ricasso means these were for the altered 1841 rifles while others suggest the lack of US mark indicates state militia use. In either case the bayonet is the correct pattern for either rifle. A near fine condition correct pattern brass mounted leather scabbard accompanies the bayonet.
