Lot Description
Interesting WWII-era Japanese Shin Gunto Katana with Signed Gendaito Blade
26.25" nagasa. 38.75" overall with tsuka and saya. Shinogi-zukuri katana blade with a single hole nakago that is signed on both sides with long mei. There is also mei to mune of nakago. Possibly Showa period. Blade appears to have a muji hada, sugu hamon, O-kissaki, ihori mune, and yakizume boshi. Blade is fitted with shin gunto mounts including tsuka with waxed brown ito, white same, and matching gold cherry blossom menuki. Tsuka also features matching cherry blossom kashira and push button release fuchi, as well as pierced tsuba that is also with cherry blossoms motifs. Saya is black painted wood and is with brown leather cover. All mountings appear to be marked with serial number 117. Some possible mei character translations include Okisato, perhaps a tribute to the renowned Kotetsu, and Yoshi saku kore (made this).
