Lot Description

Japanse Type 32 Otsu Sword
World War I-World War II

30.5" blade length. 36.75" overall with scabbard and hilt. Single edged curved blade with 28" long single fuller on both sides below the back, Ko style tip, and mounting a blued steel guard with walnut grip and steel backstrap checkered continuously with one another. Machine made blade shows a weak stamp to the right ricasso and serial number to the left reading 82160. Comes in a steel scabbard with a single suspension ring and a latch to the throat. Further inspection stamps along with the stacked cannonball logo of the {Koshikawa Arsenal} are struck into the forward face of the guard.

The Type 32 Army sword was authorized for use by Army Enlisted men in two patterns, the longer Ko, and the shorter Otsu. According to Jim Dawson in Swords of Imperial Japan, "The shorter Otsu model was intended for all NCOs and men in the military police and the transportation corps and all master sergeants in the infantry, the engineers, and the artillery." Swords of this pattern served the Imperial Japanese Army through the Russo-Japanese War until their eventual replacement by the iconic Shin-Gunto utilized during World War II.
