1849-Dated Ames Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber
American Civil War
35.5" curved, single-edged blade with a 26" stopped median fuller and an 18" secondary fuller at the spine. Blade 1.25" wide at the ricasso. 41.25" in overall length with a 5.5" hilt. Two branch brass guard with knuckle bow and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wood grip covered in leather with 19 wraps of twisted wire. Obverse ricasso marked US/WD with the "WD" being the mark of arsenal sub-inspector William Dickinson. Reverse ricasso marked AMES MFG. CO/CABOTVILLE/1849. Pommel cap with WD and JWR (James W Ripley) inspection marks. No inspection marks visible on scabbard drag or throat. Includes a steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
