Lot Description

U.S.M.C. Model 1875 NCO Sword by Horstmann
Indian Wars

28" blade length. 36" overall with scabbard and hilt. Bright blade with leather and wire wrapped hilt, peened tang, and brass guard with floral embellishments in leather scabbard with brass locket and drag. Single edge sword with twin fullers and 7" long false edge. The back of the blade is marked IRON:PROOF with the Weyersburg {King's Head} mark on the left ricasso. Right blade marked W. HORSTMANN/& SONS/PHILADELPHIA. The blade features floral acid etched designs including U.S.M.C. on the left blade between floral scroll and banners. Right blade shows the national motto E. PLURIBUS/UNUM. Top seamed brass mounted leather scabbard not of Horstmann manufacture, with white buff leather frog with faded period ink initials on the back when appear to read W Q? which may be a last name. A weak ink stamp maker's mark is present on the rear of the frog and illegible as well.
