Lot Description

Lloyd Ostendorf, Pen and Ink Wash Drawing of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln

Pen and ink wash drawing, 22 x 30 in. (sight), framed to 24 x 30 in. President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln, Feb. 1865. Signed, dated 1982, and inscribed lower right, "For my friend Kurt M. Kausler, Lloyd Ostendorf." A large, impressive rendering of a standing President Lincoln with Mary Todd Lincoln seated beside him.

Lloyd Ostendorf (American, 1921-2000) noted Lincoln historian and commercial artist of Dayton, Ohio, published five important books on Lincoln including Lincoln in Photographs (1963), a compilation of every known image of the sixteenth president. His obituary in the Chicago Tribune described him as "the definitive cataloger of Lincoln."
