Cotton, approx. 44 x 82 in., machine-sewn flag with 30 hand-sewn, double-applique cotton stars. Note stapled to hoist edge: "This flag, with but 30 stars, was made by Ernest Smell's grand-mother; probably about 1848. Wisconsin, the 30th state admitted in 1848."
