Lot Description

[Literature] Woolf, Virginia: Autograph Letter, signed

Woolf, Virginia
Autograph Letter, signed
(London), November 6, 1936. Single sheet, 8 x 6 1/2 in. (203 x 165 mm). One-page autograph letter on Monk's House stationery, signed by Virginia Woolf to scholar Robert William Chapman: "Dear Mr. Chapman, I am so sorry that I can't be at home on Monday next--I have an engagement that I can't get out of. I hope that you will soon be coming to London again, & will give me longer notice. Ariosto is still on my shelves,--waiting for your approval. Yours sincerely Virginia Woolf". Creasing from contemporary folds.

Virginia Woolf writes to R.W. Chapman (1881-1960), editor of Jane Austen's novels and letters, regretfully informing him that she would not be home when he was visiting London the following week. The two would eventually have tea together two weeks later, on November 17.
