London: Printed for John Hearne; by J.F. Dove, 1822. First edition. Folio, 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 in. (400 x 317 mm). Text printed in English and in French. Illustrated with hand-colored aquatint frontispiece and 35 hand-colored aquatint plates, on J. Whatman-watermarked paper dated 1822. Bound to style in three-quarter brown speckled calf over marbled paper-covered boards, red morocco spine label, stamped in blind and in gilt; all edges trimmed; scattered offsetting from plates on to text; scattered light foxing to text; minor wear in fore-edge of some leaves at center; with the armorial book-plate of Chapman-Purchas on front paste-down. Abbey, Travel 198; Blackmer 1814 A handsome first edition of Willyams's views of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, the basis of which derive from Willyams's earlier work, A Voyage up the Mediterranean in His Majesty's Ship the Swiftsure (1802), and that were "re-aquatinted and re-etched...presumably owing to wear."
