Lot Description

[Declaration of Independence] [South Carolina] Heyward, Thomas, Jr Autograph Note, signed

No place (likely South Carolina), no date. One sheet, 3 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. (88 x 260 mm) (sight). Autograph note, signed by Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina, Thomas Heyward, Jr. ("Heyward Atty. for Deft."), being a statement on behalf of his client William Callerton regarding a debt, seemingly cut from a larger document; further signed by Heyward in the body of text ("Thomas Heyward"). Mounted to a larger sheet. In mat and in frame, unexamined out of frame, 9 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. (241 x 419 mm).

Thomas Heyward, Jr. (1746-1809), was one of the most respected lawyers in South Carolina in the early 1770s. Despite being the son of a prominent Loyalist, Heyward was respected for his devotion to the cause of independence, and was elected to the Continental Congress in early 1776 to fill the vacancy left by John Rutledge.
