Philadelphia: Published by Moses Thomas, 1818. In four volumes. First American edition. 4to. Half-title in first volume; half-title wanting in third volume. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Johnson in first volume, by G. Fairman after Sir Joshua Reynolds. Contemporary three-quarter brown calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine repaired with tape, extremities and boards rubbed and variously worn; red speckled edges; scattered foxing and light toning to text; gutter worn at "Damask" in second volume, light dampstaining in top edge of some leaves at front of same; rear free endpaper in third volume torn away; gutter worn at front of fourth volume.
