Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Johnson by T. Cook after Sir Joshua Reynolds. Period-style three-quarter mottled brown calf over brown buckram-covered boards, stamped in blind, red morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt; all edges trimmed; dampstaining in bottom of frontispiece; title-pages moderately creased and slightly worn; scattered wear in leaves at front and at rear.
