Lot Description
London: Printed by T. Bensley, for J. Edwards, and E. Harding, 1797. First edition thus. Folio. xviii, 241 pp. Illustrated with nine engraved plates and 15 engraved head- and tail-pieces, by Bartolozzi, Vanderburg, T. Cheesman, and others after Lady Diana Beauclerc; all with fine contemporary hand-coloring; with tissue guards. Contemporary full straight-grain crimson morocco, stamped in gilt, boards and extremities rubbed, minor scratches to front and rear boards, corners moderately worn, spine ends rubbed; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; ownership signature in pen on front blank and at top of rear paste-down; two small ink stains at top of title-page; small open tear in fore-edge of p. (173); scattered minor foxing and offsetting. With the armorial book-plate of Herbert John Buckmaster on front paste-down.
Scarce copy with fine and contemporary hand-colored plates and vignettes. We cannot locate another hand-colored copy in the auction record since this very one sold at Sotheby's, in 1966.
