Lot Description

[Presidential] Taylor, Zachary Partially-Printed Document, signed

Fort Crawford (Wisconsin), February 2, 1833. One sheet, approximately 10 x 8 in. (254 x 203 mm). Manuscript document in the hand of William H. Stowe, Lieutenant 1st Infantry, signed by Colonel Zachary Taylor as commander of Fort Crawford, affirming the requisition of stationery for an upcoming court-martial. Creasing from contemporary folds. Float-mounted in mat with a portrait of Taylor and medallion; unexamined out of gilt frame, 27 1/2 x 30 1/2 in. (698 x 775 mm).

A requisition for "1/2 quire letter paper" and a "1/2 dozen quills" to be used in a court martial, signed by future president Zachary Taylor while in command of the 1st United States Infantry at Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien, in present-day Wisconsin. Taylor commanded the Fort from 1829-37.
