Lot Description

[Children's & Illustrated] Wyeth, N.C. Pittsburgh in the Beginning...Served by the Pennsylvania Railroad

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company, (ca. 1930). Pennsylvania Railroad Patriotic Posters No. 3. Color lithographic poster, 40 1/2 x 27 11/16 in. (1,029 x 703 mm). Mounted to linen, 44 7/16 x 31 3/4 in. (1,129 x 806 mm). A fine example. Allen, pp. 147-151

Commissioned in the late 1920s by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company to produce patriotic-themed paintings, N.C. Wyeth's designs were turned into posters and later calendar backs to advertise the railroad's lines of service. Although Wyeth was commissioned to produce 12 paintings, the Great Depression forced the Railroad to cancel the project after only four were completed.
