Lot Description

A painted mezzotint portrait of Captain Isaac Hull (1773-1843) Engraved by Thomas W. Freeman and George W. Pierie after Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), Philadelphia, PA, circa 1813

The mezzotint portrait with addition of paint, inscribed, "Gilbert Stuart Esq. Pinxit.," l.l., and "This Vignette from an original Drawing under the direction of Captn. Hull," l.r., all over a depiction of the naval engagement between the United States and Britain, "This portrait of Captn. Isaac Hull of the United States Navy, also the representation of the most interesting scene during the action between the United States Frigate Constitution and his Britannic Majesty's Frigate Guerriere, is most respectfully dedicated to the People of the United States by their fellow Citizen," églomisé mat and gilded frame.
