Davis, Jefferson No place, May 5, 1855. 4to. 4 pp. Autograph letter, signed three times by Davis, as Secretary of War, endorsing matters regarding payments and mileage reimbursements to officers, paymasters, and others, during the execution of their duties. Numerous sello tape repairs along original folds, scattered soiling. Together with: Davis, Varina (Biloxi, Mississippi), March 29, 1890. 16mo. 2 pp. Autograph letter, signed by Varina Davis, on Beauvoir Estate mourning stationery (her husband, Jefferson Davis, had died a little over three months earlier), to John Divinity of Tulane Univeristy, regarding a book that belonged to her late husband, Jefferson Davis: "I shall be as frank with you as you are with me about the magazine--if those marks are yours you are welcome to it, if not & if they are my husband's then I do not want to part with the book...This is one of the last books he read & we talked the matter over together..." With original postal envelope; scattered minor soiling.
