Lot Description

"Er Ya Yin Tu" (The Er Ya in Sound and Pleasure) 1801

A recut of a Yuan dynasty version of a Song dynasty edition, the illustrations copied by Yao Chushi with calligraphy by Tao Shili of Moling, and carved by Peng Wansheng of Dangtu, printed as a private-collection edition of the Yi Xue Xuan (Pavilion of Arts and Studies) in the “6th year of Jiaqing”. In three folio volumes, with approximately 633 illustrations on 89 pages, with original gold-flecked yellow paper covers, later case. NOTE: The Er Ya, China's earliest-known dictionary is based on words found in the "Classics", and is now a part of the "13 Classics". According to the present owner, no other complete copy of this edition has been located in an American collecion.
