Lot Description
London: William Kent & Co., 1859. First edition. 4to. 160 pp. Illustrated with 20 engravings from drawings by Joseph Nash, George Thomas, Birket Foster, and Edward Corbould. Inscribed by Queen Victoria on front free endpaper: "Pour/mon cher Cousin Joinville/de son affectionee/cousine/Victoria/Noel 1858" (For my dear Cousin Joinville from your affectionate cousin Victoria Christmas 1858). Publisher's red cloth, elaborately stamped in blind and in gilt, enclosed in a full red straight-grain morocco solander box, elaborately gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (Asprey). Francois Ferdinand Philippe Louis Marie, Prince of Joinville (1818-1900), third son of Louis Philippe, duc d'Orleans, afterwards king of France, fled to Claremont House in Surrey after his family's exile from France after the revolution of 1848.
