The artist also issued a suite “Coins/Medals (3 elements),” in an edition of five. This suite includes the silver, gold and copper medals, each of which is individually numbered 6 through 10. There is also an edition of 10 of the copper element in which each copper coin is individually numbered 11 through 20.
Richard Tuttle wrote an artist’s statement which elucidates his thinking around the creation of the Coins / Medals project, underscoring his exploration of the concept of money as a physical, mundane part of everyday life and an abstract representation of value. He carefully navigates the line where he says “the concrete becomes abstract” and employs precious metals in a variety of ways to play with the idea of value. Tuttle manipulates each element—aluminum, silver, copper and gold—in different ways, imprinting designs and impressions into their surfaces, even asking his friend Kiki Smith to press her thumbprint into the materials. This limited edition created at Hackett’s Art Foundry Editions in turn becomes a precious object in its own right.
