Lot Description

[Music] Hawkins, Sir John A General History of the Science and Practice of Music

London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, 1776. In five volumes. First edition. 4to. Illustrated with numerous plates of musical notation and in-text vignettes. Contemporary full tree calf, stamped in gilt, rebacked in modern calf, covers worn, edges blistered and worn, corners worn with the bottom front corner of the second volume starting to split; all edges trimmed; marbled endpapers. Final leaf in first volume trimmed and laid down on later paper; dampstaining to edges of pp. 45-51 in third volume; open tear to bottom edge of pp. 397/398 in fifth volume; scattered foxing and offsetting; chipping and small closed tears to several prelims. Ex-library with book-plate on front paste-down, blind stamps to title-page and final leaf, and ink stamp and pencil notation to title-page verso, all in each volume.
