Lot Description

[Music] Hammerstein, Oscar, II Lyrics

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1949. First edition. 8vo. Signed and inscribed by Hammerstein, quoting lyrics from the song "Make Believe" from Show Boat: "For Lionel Aucosin who requested/that I write out the refrain of/'Make Believe' before he had seen/my handwriting. 'Only make believe I love you,/Only make believe that you love me./Others find peace of mind in pretending-/Couldn't you? Couldn't I? Couldn't we?/Make believe our lips are blending/In a phantom kiss, or two or three./Might as well make believe I love you/For to tell the truth, I do -'/(Translation on p. 167)/With all good wishes-/Oscar Hammerstein." Publisher's brick-red cloth, minor wear; in pictorial dust-jacket, chipping to top edge and a few short closed tears. A very good copy.
