Lot Description
London and Bury St. Edmunds, 1794. In two volumes. Second edition. 4to. (i)-viii, (1)-629, [3]; (ii), (1)-336, [4]pp. +3 maps. Presentation copy with an unpublished, two-page manuscript poem in 38 lines of rhyming couplets on a front blank, dedicated to "Miss Plampin from the author." Illustrated with three folding maps bound in the first volume. Contemporary gilt-paneled straight-grain crimson morocco, gilt-scrolled inner panels with gilt foliate corners, gilt-decorated edges, spine compartments, and dentelles, all edges gilt, with dark green morocco spine labels and marbled endpapers; corners bumped, joints and spine ends slightly rubbed, maps lightly toned with minor offsetting and scattered foxing, and with a few closed tears. With the armorial book-plate of Hasted on front paste-downs and later book-plate of Mary Bryant Sprague on rear paste-downs in each volume.
