1 Piece. (Mahler, Gustave, et al.) Fan Signed. Mahler, Gustav; Klemperer, Otto; Schnabel, Arthur; Betz, Franz; Dohm, E.; and approximately 30 others active in German artistic and cultural life. Ca. late 19th century - 1933. Silk-threaded wood panels, about 10 x 18 inches; 254 x 457 mm; in double-paned shadow box. Includes inscriptions and musical quotations. This fan was signed by visiting musicians, writers, and other artist gathering at "salons" held at the home of the culturally prominent German-Jewish Jolowicz family, founders of the Akademische Verlagsgesellschraft (Academic Press) in Leipzig. Anneliese Jolowicz, a respected singer and pianist, who sang the role of Jenny in the 1930 production of Kurt Weil and Berthold Brecht's Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at the Staatstheater in Kassel, remained in the United States after performing with Jan Pierce at New York's Radio City Music Hall in 1938, "Kristallnacht" having made her return to Germany problematic in the extreme.
Provenance: family descent from Anneliese Jolowicz.
