(Americana : The West). Photo Album. Hunting Expedition of George Frederick Norton to the American West - likely Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana, ca. 1910.
1 piece. Oblong 4to, original cloth; lightly wear, slightly dusty. Holding 108 mounted ("vernacular”) silver gelatin photoprints, 54 of which measure 4 ¾ x 6 3/4 inches; 120 x 175mm, and 54 measuring 2 1/2 x 3 ? inches; 60 x 85 mm [or the obverse]. Some fading and spotting to a few photos, but most are generally clean, clear and intact.
Subjects include harvested moose, elk, cougar, and pronghorn antelope; field dressing harvested game, the hunting camp and its tents, making and breaking camp, the party with its pack animals on the move on the plains, traversing the high country and moving through the snow, party members on horseback, the party's horses and dogs. Generally intense.
Norton, George Frederick,1876 - 1917, adventurer, hunter, traveler, member of Peary's final expedition to the North Pole, contributed a grizzly bear specimen, known as the "Norton Bear," to the Smithsonian. Killed in France, during the First World War, while serving in the American Ambulance Corps, Section 1, by a bomb dropped from a German airplane.
