The Halle Orphanage was founded in the 1690s by August Hermann Francke. It housed over 2,000 children, and also was home to a printing press, pharmacy and library. Franke's latin preface givs a full account of this edition which was pub. largely at the expense of Sophia Louisa, Queen of Prussia.
