This issue of the paper most closely associated with the Federalist party & the administration of George Washington, contains an address to the public by Benjamin Franklin as President of Pennsylvania Society for promoting the abolition of slavery and the relief of free negroes. This is one of Franklin's strongest moral statements on a subject of great historical importance. Franklin did not speak out against slavery until very late in his life. It was only in 1789 that he wrote & published supporting the abolition of slavery; in 1790s his last public act was to send to Congress a petition on behalf of the Society asking for the abolition of slavery. This issue also published letters by George Washington.
