Lot Description

Art Deco platinum, carved emerald and diamond necklace, Mauboussin france, ca. 1928

Graduated carved classical figure cameo emeralds, separated by platinum diamond lotus motif links. Signed by the maker, displaying serial no. X4504 with hallmarks. Necklace converts into double matching bracelets and central carved emerald can be worn as a single pendant. Note: The platinum links used in the necklace echo similar themes used by important jewelers during the 1920s into the early 1930s. French jewelers such as Cartier, Boucheron and Mauboussin went through periods of Asian, Egyptian and Indian influence. This necklace reminiscent of those periods in both setting style, and gem stone use. 'Fantasy carved' gemstones were popular among jewelers, in emerald, ruby and sapphire and set into pieces such as this, a popular example being the 'Tutti-Frutti' bracelets. Like Belperron and Boivin, Mauboussin did not readily sign every piece produced prior to being purchased by Trabert and Hoeffer, in the early 1930s.
