Lot Description
Choker style necklace composed of nine square panels of varying 'Etruscan' design and style followed by a petite curb link and Helios clasp. Reverse signed "Executed by Eduardo Melillo Under the Direction of Giacinto Melillo, Napoli Marzo 1899", and 'GM' signature on far right panel. Note: Giacinto Melillo was appointed by the Castellani family to manage the Castellani work shop in Naples. Melillo took the work shop as his own in 1865 continuing to produce jewelry in the Castellani 'Archeological style'. Having won the Legion D'honneur at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, he is recognized as having produced much of the jewelry Allessandro Castellani displayed and sold bearing the Castellani hallmark in the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle. A matching piece is currently with the British Museum, London gifted from Professor and Mrs. John Hull Grundy, and is known to be based on jewelry from the Campana Collection which the Castellani family was well aquianted.
