Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOG] [WHIPPLE, John Adams., attrib.] Quarter plate daguerreotype of a fur-clad young woman

Standing portrait of a young girl wearing a luxurious, fur-trimmed cape and floral hat, leaning on a velvet-upholstered studio chair. (Tarnishing to edges, some veining to plate surface; resealed 2013.) Housed in a pressed paper case.

Consignor attributes this image to Whipple.

John Adams Whipple (1822-1891) was the first in the US to manufacture the chemicals necessary for Daguerreotypes. He was a pioneer in astronomical photography, making some of the earliest photographs of the moon and stars (other than the sun), including a partial solar eclipse. He was a well-known portraitist in his native Massachusetts, which is likely where this portrait was taken.

Sally Anyan, The Daguerreian Society Past President
